The cork costs $0.05.

If you want the math way to figure out the solution, you can start with the notion that the cork costs X.

That would mean: X + (X + $1.00) = $1.10

You can simplify that into: 2X + $1.00 = $1.10

Subtract $1.00 from both sides: 2X = $0.10

Divide both sides by 2 to get X by itself: X = $0.05

Therefore, the cork costs $0.05 and if you subtract the cost of the cork ($0.05) from the total cost ($1.10) then the bottle of wine costs $1.05. What a steal for that bottle of wine.

This also satisfies the original statement that the bottle of wine costs $1.00 more than the cork.

Did you get it right without looking at the answer?
