9 is the correct answer.
You can solve for x by getting all values of x on one side of the equation and if you do that, you will get the following:
- Original equation: 3(x + 1) / x – 4 = 6
- Multiply the 3 for each value in the parenthesis: (3x + 3) / (x – 4) = 6
- Multiply x – 4 by both sides to remove it from the left side: 3x + 3 = 6x – 24
- Add 24 to both sides to remove it from the right side and subtract 3x from both sides to remove it from the left side: 27 = 3x
- Divide both sides by 3 to get a single value of x: 9 = x
- The answer: x = 9
Then you can check your answer by replacing x in the equation with 9:
- 3(9 + 1) / 9 – 4 = 6
- 27 + 3 / 5 = 6
- 30 / 5 = 6
- 6 = 6
