Can you solve this logic puzzle?

You are in a room with two doors. One door leads to certain death and the other door leads to freedom.

In front of each door is a guard. One guard always tells the truth and the other always lies. You can ask each guard one question to determine which door leads to freedom.

What do you ask?

Think you know the answer?

To see the answer to this logic puzzle, click to expand the accordion below.

Ask either guard, “If I were to ask the other guard which door leads to freedom, which door would they point to?”

Then choose the opposite door to get to freedom.

This works because:

  • If you ask the truth teller, they will tell you the door the liar would indicate, which is the wrong door.
  • If you ask the liar, they will lie about the door the truth teller would indicate, again giving you the wrong door.

This way, both guards will indicate the wrong door, allowing you to choose the other one that leads to freedom.

Try to ask a question that will get both of them to answer with the same door, regardless if that door is the right or wrong one. You can always pick the other one, but you need to get both of them to indicate the same door.
