You have three boxes:

  1. One box contains only apples

  3. One box contains both apples and oranges

Each box is labeled, but all the labels are wrong. You are allowed to pick one fruit from each box. How can you correctly label all the boxes.

Think you know the answer?

Pick a fruit from the box labeled “Both.” Since all the labels are wrong, this box will not contain both apples and oranges. If you pick an apple, this box must be the one that contains only apples. If you pick an orange, this box must be the one that contains only oranges.

Let’s say you pick an apple, that box can now correctly be labeled “Apples Only.” The box that has the original label of “Oranges Only” must be the Both” box because all the original labels are wrong.

Therefore, the box that was originally labeled “Apples Only” is the “Oranges Only” box.

Remember that all the original labels are wrong and try picking from the box labeled “Both” first. That will tell you what should be the true label for that box.
